CANALSIDE WELCOMES THE GRAND OPENING OF THE THREE RIVERS GREENWAY ESPLANADE

Columbia, SC (February 20, 2009) - The City of Columbia held the grand opening of the Three Rivers Greenway Esplanade at CanalSide Friday morning. Mayor Robert D. Coble, members of Columbia City Council and representatives of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, The Beach Company, River Alliance and Columbia Development Corporation participated in the ribbon cutting that marked the official opening to the public.

The Esplanade is an approximately 1,100-foot linear public walkway located along the east bank of the Columbia Canal, adjacent to CanalSide. The $3.5 million project included repairing an existing historic granite retaining wall, construction of the public walkway, installation of decorative lighting, ornamental fencing and park benches. The opening of the Esplanade is a major step towards the completion of the Three Rivers Greenway, which totals over twelve miles of public walkway along the Columbia, West Columbia and Cayce Riverfront.
